I’d stated on twitter (@briaquinlan) at the end of August that I’d be doing a Fast Draft at the end of September, which means ….. *glances at calendar*…. uh-oh! Next week!
Fast Draft? What’s that? you say.
When I first started writing I wrote a big fantasy book (still love this story *stares longingly at Markbearer*) and broke the book into three sections – little books. I wrote every day like a crazy woman, 16-31 pages a day until that section was done. I’d take a few days off and start working on it from the beginning. When I was done with that book-within-a-book I’d move onto the next one.
Eventually someone let me know I was Fast Drafting. So, off I went to join Candace Haven’s yahoo group. It’s a great group. Beyond the FDing, she does classes and interviews – a definite must follow.
Anyway, the basis that FD was basically what I was doing with a few more boundaries put around my writing yard has created a get-it-down pattern for me. And now it’s time to do the next book.
Since there was such an interest in it on twitter, I’m bringing it to the blog.
To play along you have to do two things:
- Join Candace’s yahoo group HERE: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Write_Workshop/ (ETA: Yes, lots of questions asking: If it’s not something I like, can I unsign up? –> yes, and you won’t get on a list or get bothered)
- Follow Candace on twitter HERE: @Candacehavens
- Also, it would be a great thank you if you’d go buy one of her books – and you won’t regret it
Once you’ve joined the group, check out these posts to see how it works:

Okay, welcome back.
I can already hear several of you challenging me: But Bria, you aren’t working right now. Of course you can get 20 pages a day done.
Let me tell you a couple things:
- Candy manages to do this while running the world. Seriously, I have no idea where the woman found an extra 16 hours a day, but she’s amazing
- The first 3 times I FDed I had 2 jobs, was volunteering and traveled for work – I just looked at my page count for the 2nd round (deleted the others) and saw that I only missed 20 pages 2 times – and one of those times I woke up on the couch at 4:30am with the laptop still in my lap … don’t judge
- Writing doesn’t have to happen in huge chunks – I wrote at STOPLIGHTS! Seriously, it will be the one time in your life when you’re disappointed to hit that puppy green
- Not everyone does 20. I HIGHLY recommend trying to tho. I found that personally that Fast Draft Magic she talks about is very real, but that your brain needs to consciously max out to hit it. A friend of mine complains she never has the FD Magic so she doesn’t think it’s real, but she only does 5 pages a day. I think that 5 pages a day is great b/c you’re getting it done, but there is the flip side to missing some of the magic.
- My CP is a Plotter (note the capital P) – She does a plotting FD, then later does a writing FD, and then does Revision Hell. Feel free to join us in a Plotting FD
Basically, what I’m saying is that Fast Draft is for anyone who wants to get it done. Do you want to get it done?
Once you’ve checked it out and started prepping come back here and comment so you can play along!
Fast drafting is like my crack. I can’t envision writing any other way. If I take breaks, I lose my focus or something. First book = seventeen years. Second book = three weeks. So obviously it works for me. Try it, you won’t be sorry! I wish I could join you but I’m editing and I have a bad habit of starting new projects before finishing the old one. I’m trying to break it.
I’ve been waiting for this. I’m in. I’ll start working on my scene list tomorrow.
YAY!!!! I’m so sorry you’ve been waiting but I”m SO excited you’re in…. We won’t talk about how that Kat girl doesn’t want to play with us.
I’m totally in. I just started a new WIP and need something like this to really push me into progress. BUT I’m a FD newb, so I’m going to commit to 10 pages/day. Be gentle with me, Bria!
YAY! Another … um, participant!
You’re going to love it – you’re going to carry a notebook with you everywhere and shush people so you can write stuff down
Here from your twitter page. I’m totally in. I used to fast draft all the time and then… stopped. I refuse to give in to entropy!
YAY! It rocks my socks, doesn’t it!
I’m in. No excuses.
YAY!
I mentioned this last time you shoved Fast Draft into the limelight, and I love it. Fantastic, and so awesome that she’s offering all that info up for free.
I’m saving my currently-plotted book for NaNoWriMo this year, but there’s a good chance I’ll be using FastDraft methodology and philosophy! As much pre-planning as I’m doing, I’m hoping for relatively smooth sailing when it comes to the actual writing!
Hey Tami – I’m going to do edits/revisions during NaNo so have a new book done by the end of the year – You’ll see me at Nano too
And, what is all this pre-planning you’re talking about????
*giggles* Is that the sound of a Pantser I hear, or are you really asking what kind of pre-planning I’m doing? ^_^
Please, I’m begging you, don’t tell me! Even hearing about it sometimes makes me break out in hives!
I have a first line…. LOL
Okay, honestly, once I start into my story it’s like suddenly remembering a memory bit by bit. Like when someone says, remember when we were kids and…. and you go back and forth filling out the picture, everything getting clearer and clearer… I’ve tried planning/plotting it has NOT worked for me
*giggles* As a plotter, I look at you pantsers with good-natured bemusement, like a penguin slightly concerned for the safety of the seagulls overhead.
I’ve actually pants’d two novels, and holy mother of monkeys the revisions and rewrites are painful. I am happy it works for you, but I need STRUCTURE. *winks*
At least, I think I do. We’ll see how NaNoWriMo goes before I get too passionate about my outlining methods! =]
HA! And we look at you guys thinking …. Those poor turkeys are writing the darn book TWICE…. poor dears
*giggle* We have some pantsers in our NaNoWriMo forums asking for help and I’m learning to sit on my hands. Why on earth would seagulls ask penguins for flying tips?
All I can tell them is about this awesome new flip I learned how to do underwater!
I’m in. I’m SO in! Waiting to be accepted into the yahoo group and then off and running (or preparing to be, anyway)
YAY!!!!! You’re going to love it
Count me in! I’m not too sure about hitting that 20 pages but I’m hoping for the magic – hit me with some magic!
YAY! Another one suuuuucked in
I am SO in. I have my plot notes ready to go and my fingers crossed. I’m a slow, slow, slow writer because my Internal Editor is always on duty. Hoping FD can help me shut her up.
you can do it – the first three days are hard to turn off the IE, but after that it starts to get easier
Count me in. I’ve been dog-sick, and I’m not better yet, but I’m willing to give it a shot!
Another victim
I signed up for Candace’s group when I first saw you mention it on Yahoo, so I’m excited for Monday! Can’t wait to see what happens.
You’re going to love her group – lots of great stuff going on
I’m not getting any of the emails, though — or is that only for the editing class that’s going on right now? Does all the discussion happen at the Yahoo site?
Have you gotten the editing ones? She’s also traveling so she may not have approved our pending – maybe send her a tweet?
I have gotten the emails with the class notes, but not any others.
No, that’s right – unless you sign up for the group chat loop, you’ll just get Candy’s notes (or whoever isher guest)
Yeah, I thought I had signed up for the chat loop …
nope – not unless you signed up for 2 loops – they’re seperate
