Boy Meets Girl — Ridiculousness Ensues

How Goes Life April 30, 2009

Filed under: Writing, YA, editing, revisions — briaq @ 6:47 am

Revisions. I’m learning a ton — but it’s taking more time than I thought.

I Did the first big pass – it took waaaaayyy more time than I anticipated. And then I had to enter the written edits in, which isn’t something I typically have to do as I try to work on the screen as much as possible. And then entering them in you always thinking of something just a little better in a c couple places which means stopping to read and rework again.

And now there’s the list of things that were big that you needed to read the whole thing over again to be able to do it.

My aim? Hand it to a beta on Monday. Is that doable? I have no idea. I didn’t think it would take over a month once I was feeling better to do this first pass.

So, that’s me and where I am. On the writing.

I also gave notice to my landlord and to the little shop I work in for the big ‘drive around the country living out of your car because that’s all you can afford’ trip. So I also have a month to do that. Oh, and the yard sale next Saturday — which, if the beta has the ms by Monday should be just fine…yup…jjjjjusttt fine.

So, that’s me.

Welcome to me completely cheating this week. I’m behind where I wanted to be with the R&R so I’m “knowing when to say no” to blogging.

BUT, if you didn’t check out the live Book Club Chat post with Rosemary Clement-Moore , you really missed out. She talked about her first two books and a whole lot about writing in general. Really, it’s a must read.

I can tell you, she’s become an auto-buy for me :)

As always….

WARNING: This is NOT a review – it’s a Blog Book Club. That means, we’re going to discuss the book – the whole book – yes – even the end – so guess what. There’s going to be spoilers.

SPOILERS PEOPLE!

NO! Seriously. If you read past here, it’s your own darn fault.

OK. Welcome to Luv YA’s Book Club Book Blog – with Rosemary Clement-Moore discussing her second book, Rita Nominated HELL WEEK!

BUT FIRST….. Two things.

1) Please remember that the book club is for Hell Week, the SECOND Maggie Quinn book. I’m asking nicely, but I will delete posts that give spoilers to book three. It’s pretty new and too good to ruin for someone who hasn’t gotten a chance to pick it up yet. Also, Rosemary may have to quick step some questions to avoid giving spoilers for book three. Please be kind as she does this.

2) At someone’s request I’m starting an email list strictly for book club if you’re on the list:

  • Email a month in advance announcing the next book
  • Email a 2 weeks in advance as a reminder
  • Email several days before confirming Book Club is good to go
  • That’s it unless I’m looking for Book Club suggestions which probably won’t happen often
  • If you’re interested, email me at briaquinlan@aol.com

And here we go!

I really cannot tell you how darn excited I am to have Rosemary Clement-Moore here to discuss her book Hell Week (if you haven’t guessed all of that already, now you know) – For you newbies, feel free to read the Book Club post and dive in with a question or two. Rosemary will be with us and answering them live tonight :)

Maggie Quinn, Girl Reporter and Butt-Kicker of Evil, should be enjoying all the perks of starting college, like finagling her way onto the staff of the school paper, but –as with most things in Maggie’s life — Yeah. Not so much.

It’s bad enough wondering what’s going on with her MIA almost-boyfriend Justin who spent the summer in Ireland, but after one night, it’s pretty clear that going undercover at Sorority Rush may just sharpen her snark skills to deadly.

When Maggie opens herself up to continuing in the Greek system as a pledge to write exposes for the newspaper, strange things start to happen. Not that that’s anything new. But her normal Sight dreams are getting weird and now she’s having these vision flashes when she touches things. That’s a way to learn way more than you wanted to know. Like about Deidre, the girl who just happened to be looking pretty intense with Justin in Ireland. Yeah, she definitely could have skipped knowing that. But when she comes out and asks him about it, Justin gives it to her straight: He likes her but needs to focus on school.

Ouch.

And so Maggie throws herself into the undercover work, getting sucked into Sorority life. Which means Pledging, Parties and  Some Word That Starts With “P” that means “hot guys who kiss you behind the bar.” Oh yeah, and let’s not forget the most important P: Paranormal.

Maggie discovers there’s more going on in the SAXi house than anyone suspects, and a very clear reason the pledges can’t have sex…does the word succubus mean anything to you?

Well, that put a damper on her reclaiming Justin plans. But, if a girl ever needed inspiration to not become a succubus (um, yeah) he’s definitely the one. So Maggie does what any girl bent on saving the world would do: She breaks into the heart of darkness, finds their secrets and begins the butt-kicking plan-building.

And then the threats begin, because did we mention that her mom has a “P” word of her own? She’s preggers and no one, no matter how powerful the demon she’s summoned, is going to screw with the people Maggie loves.

MUST READ. Seriously – I have not done the skim-the-set-up justice :)

And now onto the pre-chat Q&A with Rosemary Clement-Moore

Let’s start with the dreaded, “So, Rosemary, tell us a bit about yourself.” were you a snarker like Maggie? Was writing always your thing? Have you vanquished anything lately?

I’ve always been a storyteller, with a wild imagination. Plus I have very eclectic interests, which made it hard to decide what I wanted to be when I grew up. So I became a writer, so I wouldn’t have to pick just one thing to study.

Was I snarky? Only in my head. Outwardly, I was very polite and well mannered. I did theatre and I was surrounded by boisterous, funny people, and I had this quiet, dry sense of humor that I kept to myself. It wasn’t really until college that I came out of my shell. It’s just gotten worse since then.

The only thing I’ve vanquished recently is the dust bunnies from under the couch.

Where exactly IS Avalon? Is Bedivere University named for something?

Some people assume it’s in Texas, since I’m from Texas. And it could be. :-) But once you say “Texas” people assume rednecks and cowboy boots and big hair. I wanted to avoid those stereotypes. I wanted Avalon to have that “everywhere” feel, like Middleton in Kim Possible cartoons.

And of course the name is part of that, because Avalon, in mythology, is not part of our world. Bedivere University named from that mythology, by the way. I’ll let the intrepid Googlers figure out the connection. :-)

I love Maggie. Even when she accepts things, she fights them kicking and screaming. One of your reviewers said she was kind of a “Veronica Mars fights demons.” How do you see her?

Maggie comes from the tradition of Nancy Drew — that plucky young heroine whose curiosity and do-gooder-ness is always leading her into danger, but her smarts and resourcefulness get her out of it. I didn’t watch Veronica Mars before I wrote the book(s), but I think she (VM) falls in this category too.

Maggie draws comparisons to Buffy, too, but I think those are more superficial. The both fight evil while cracking wise. But Maggie’s bravado is all to cover her terror. :)

Why a reporter? Was it a conscious decision or has it always just been part of who Maggie is?

I knew she’d be a reporter before I knew anything else about her. Think Brenda Starr and Lois Lane. She’s always sticking her nose where it doesn’t belong, always wants to get the whole story… even when she knows she’s not going to like it.

Maggie walks a really fine line between belief and disbelief. How do you balance that when writing her?

When I gave Maggie the Sight, I could have given her all the answers. But what fun would that be? It’s too easy. A leap of faith isn’t much of a challenge if you can clearly see the net beneath you. So Maggie questions everything… it’s rooted in her personality, that ‘dogged reporter’ thing. (See! It all plays together!)

Also I feel that her disbelief makes her fictional world (which is rooted in ours) more believable. Because I sure would question all these things if they started happening around me! so that voice in Maggie’s head that says “convince me” is a kind of reader surrogate.

I’ll be honest, I thought you were going to break my heart with Justin in Hell Week. Why did he back off at the beginning? And, for college students, their relationship moves fairly slowly — I’m enjoying watching it a lot. What made you decide to keep things physically light in this book?

Ha! My critique partner threatened me with mayhem if I broke Maggie and Justin up. Here’s the deal: Prom Dates From Hell (book 1) left them about to go on their first real date, then there’s a three month gap to the next book. I needed to reset the clock a bit, so we can all watch theri relationship develop. As for Justin’s motivation… Well, he has his own questions he’s asking, and we don’t know everything about him just yet.  (Just a teaser: we find out a lot more in book three.)

As for pace, I wanted to leave myself someplace to go. If Maggie and Justin reach complete physical and emotional intimacy too early, we don’t get a chance to enjoy the journey. The road to love is fun to read about, so why rush it?

And geez, he does get her shirt off. What more do you want?

No, wait. Don’t answer that.

And really, is there any better place to jump into our chat time than there *wink*

Bettering Bria’s Book…Revisions April 19, 2009

Filed under: Writing, YA, editing, revisions — briaq @ 9:11 am

Revisions. Requested ones no less.

That’s been my main focus since I’ve been healthy enough to focus on anything again…..and I have to tell you: It was hard starting them and I know the more difficult part is coming toward the end. BUT, how exciting is it? I’ll admit, at first it was hard to see request clearly. I mean, even when it was really exciting. But I found my own Magic View Finder for getting started.

Let’s pretend getting so sick it scares your doctor isn’t on the list and move on.

  • Read the email – several times. Ok, several times more than several times
  • Print it out and highlight everything you immediately agree with and know how you want to handle
  • Think about it a couple days and look at it again, repeat step two
  • Make tons of notes in your handy-dandy
  • Put them both away
  • Work on a project that is so far removed from it, someone else may have been writing it
  • Print R&R work out
  • Re-read R&R email
  • Get to work

When I need to take breaks from the intense world of my YA Fantasy, I write little Rom Com’y stuff. You know, just funny stuff to kind of loosen up and clear my writing pallet. Only, the funniest thing happened. People who saw them, wanted to see more of them. That’s how Secret Girlfriend and Cami’s First Kiss (my Excerpt Monday serial) came to life.

The distance all of that gave me was amazing. Things that were easy to read over before stuck out like a sore thumb. There were actually things that weren’t mentioned that I noticed. I am so excited about the book again, it’s almost daunting.

Ok, take the “almost” out — it IS daunting. It’s daunting to really *honestly* start to see this book’s true potential and fear you can’t make it happen. To see that what you did WAS good, IS good, but it can be better…so much better. To be know the hard part is coming and that, while you’re excited, you’re also a little scared of what it’s going to entail and if you can pull it off.

Which, yes is weird since you pulled it off enough to get thru the first couple steps of this process. But (since it’s Patriots Day Weekend) think about it like The Boston Marathon. You’ve run really far. I mean, REALLY far. But you’ve run this far before, right? Marathons…you’ve even done a few, you know what to expect. You scoped out Heartbreak Hill the Saturday before and saw the slow steady incline that finishes people off so near the end. You get it. You know it in your head. And then you hit that fricking fracking hill and as a friend of mine put it you’re “praying to die so they carry your body away for you or just finish the damn thing and black it out. But when you get to the top -you don’t even realize it until it’s behind you - and you hear people shouting for you b/c of the name painted on your shirt and there’s the next water stand and everything feels loud and quiet at the same time and you realize…you may not have blacked it out, but you’re past it and it’s done and you’re just another runner on the other side.”

Yeah, Revisions.

Publishing Blogs Weekly Round-Up April 17, 2009

Filed under: Agents, Weekly Blog Round Up, Writing, publishing — briaq @ 8:03 am

Welcome to Friday!

First off, just  a reminder that Tuesday night is Luv YA Book Club — how exciting to have another author with us? Rosemary Clement-Moore!

There still time to rush out and read Hell Week. And it’s definitely worth it.

There seemed to be a lot going on this week, but here’s a small round up of some high points of people I love to read:

If you missed it, Nathan Bransford had an Agent for a Day thing going this week. It’s worth taking a peek at. I’m excited to see what his thoughts were compared to his readers. Unfortunately, there were so many posts involved, that I just linked to his site. You’ll have to use the search bar there.

Jessica Faust did a blog post this week on some of the smaller questions she’s gotten. Quick one-and-done type of things. Check them out HERE.

Carrie Loft at CJLA did a great post on Unusual Historicals. Even if you don’t write Romance, it has great thoughts on writing about the past.

Richard Curtis has two posts this week on the Google Settlement. If you write and you aren’t following this, well, you really should be following this somewhere….start HERE and HERE.

You often hear writers complain, “I have a contract in hand and agents won’t talk to me.” Then you’ll read the comments and there will be a bunch of, “Well s0-and-so said at a conference to bring it on.” So? What’s the deal? Janet Reid blogged about it this week.

Don’t forget it’s #queryday on twitter. Just curious which sub-group will be able to get angry at this…and my odd little thought: To the writers who are STILL complaining about agents on Twitter not “getting their work done because they’re tweeting” — what are you doing on Twitter? Go write.

Excerpt Monday: Cami’s First Kiss April 13, 2009

Filed under: Writing, YA, excerpt monday — briaq @ 7:35 am

Welcome to Excerpt Monday. I hope you can join Mel Berthier and me in posting a snippet of your work. Feel free to link back to each of us and we’ll return the favor. . . of course, all my links will be PG-13 :)

Some other people joining us for Excerpt Monday: Jeannie Lin, Christa McHugh, Gina Ardito, RF Long, Isabelle Santiago, Kaige Quinlan

The thick smoker-voice on the other end of the phone made demands I wanted to ignore. “It’s time for Cami’s first kiss.”

“What? It can’t be,” I replied, pushing back the panic. “She’s far too young to be involved with boys.”

“Honey, she’s sixteen. Almost seventeen if I remember correctly.”

“But, kissing? Boys?” I shook my head against the receiver, my glasses clinking the earpiece. “I don’t think she’s ready.”

“No, Jenna. You’re not ready. But that doesn’t mean a girl doesn’t reach that age without us.”

I glared at my Hello Kitty phone, tempted to hang-up and claim a bad connection.

“I think maybe a big school dance story line would be great,” Rachel continued. “She’s co-captain of her soccer team and vice president of the junior class. Isn’t there anyone she’d be interested in?”

Rachel Bucken, agent extraordinaire slash pushiest woman on the planet had never steered me wrong before. That didn’t mean I had to like it.

I collapsed back in my worn, leather office chair, tempted to spin until I was dizzy. “It’s time?”

“Sugar, it’s past time.”

“I’m not sure.” It’s too soon. “Maybe I could work a potential love interest into the next book.” If anyone good enough crosses my word-processing fingers. “And then we can fold it into senior year.” Or college. Or never.

“I know you want to protect her, sweetie.” Rachel’s voice sounded muffled, the click-clack of a keyboard echoing in the background. Agent Extraordinaire was also Multitasking Empress.

The clatter from her phone hitting the ground told me I’d been right.

“Sorry about that,” Rachel said. “You still there?”

“Mmhmm.”

“Ok, Jenna. Here’s the deal. Forest Oak won’t take another book unless Cami matures a little. Your fan mail is from girls who grew up with her and, while a lot of them are shy or nerdy or untrusting or whatever it is keeping them from kissing a boy, that doesn’t mean they don’t want Cami to. So the deal is, next book, out early fall, homecoming maybe. Cami gets a kiss.”

I pushed back and spun, the phone cord wrapping around my neck. A sign perhaps?

“All right. I’ll do my best.”

“You always do, my little overachiever.”

Without a goodbye, Rachel had hung-up and gone on to her next seven multitasking events.

Untangling myself from Ms. Kitty’s tail, I opened the drawer where my writing notes were lovingly filed, alphabetized and color coordinated. The blue file was right where it was supposed to be, fourth back in the character notes, behind the pink girl folder but in front of the black folder of death — the place characters who didn’t work out went to die.

Marty O’Donnell — snob, dated best friend, dumped her for a cheerleader.

Mark Bedwin — smelled funny, mentioned in three books.

Tony Baccio — funny, smart, cute. Friends brother. Should be in college this fall.

Kevin Kline — currently dating best friend.

Slamming the blue folder closed, I considered transferring Cami to a girls boarding school run by nuns on an unchartered island. If I did that, I could add the blue folder to the black one and cut down on folders. It was economical. It made sense.

It would lose me a contract.

Grabbing Hello Kitty, I dialed Lisbeth Nardi’s number in desperation.

“Ciao.”

Lisbeth was the only person I knew who could get away with answering her phone like that. She was also the only person I knew who had kissed half the metro area.

“Lis, I need my character to get kissed. I need a guy and a kiss description.”

“Aren’t you supposed to write what you know?” I heard the laughter in her voice and knew she didn’t mean to be cruel. Unfortunately, she was also right.

“That’s why I need you. You can tell me how kissing a guy feels the first time.” Her earlier words still stung, so I added, “You’ve had plenty of first kisses.”

A sigh blasted my ear. One of those declare-yourself-a-martyr sighs.

“First off Jenna, I think what you need to do is just get out there. Get your own first kisses. Get your own life.”

I could almost hear her shrug over the phone.

“Second, your character isn’t you. Her boyfriend is imaginary. He’s not going to convince her to go to the same college, propose the middle of junior year, stand her up at the altar because his frat brothers called him an idiot at the bachelor party the night before, and then try to convince her they should still have sex on the side. That stuff only happens to you.”

“You’re no help.” If the queen of the pick-up couldn’t help me, I was out of luck.

“Oh, I’ll help all right,” she answered. “Actually, I wouldn’t miss this for the world. Meet me outside O’Leary’s at ten and I’ll be more help than you could have wished for.”

Come back next month to watch Jenna try to follow Lisbeth’s lead….and as always, ridiculousness ensues.

First off, just a reminder: Luv YA Book Club is in just over a week (April 20th) and this months book is Rita Nominated Hell Week by Rosemary Clement-Moore.

Ok, have we all recovered from Agentfail? Hopefully yes and everyone is moving on….soooooo…..

HarperCollins is publishing at least one book fully written by Michael Crichton posthumously. It’s about pirates. Need I say more?

Because we’re still trying to figure out if we even have a platform, let alone what it might be, here’s another blog post on that. But, it’s by Jessica Faust. So, Need I say more about that?

Saundra Mitchell on Crowe’s Nest did a great post on Self-Promotion. It’s never to early to start thinking about this stuff!

Writing on the Wall did a great post this week about recognizing beauty out of context. Basically, if a writer who has been declared brilliant writes something not typically published under a different name, would we notice? It reminded me a lot of the blog I did last year at Purple Hearts about the Jane Austen experiment (covered by The Guardian) where an author sent a bunch of query letters for Pride and Prejudice. He got turned down, shot down, and basically talked down to. Only one person who responded recognized the plot.

Two years ago, I read my first romance novel. I was a snob before that, but some really wonderful writers convinced me that (just like every genre) I needed to ignore those poorly written books and embrace the gems. Apparently, most of America is doing that – even in this economic crisis. Check out what the NYT has to say about that.

Where Am I This Week? April 8, 2009

Just checked the blog and saw I’m getting a lot of hits this week — and haven’t even posted anything.

For those curious, I’m feeling much better. 2 months of being that sick is something I wouldn’t wish on anyone. But, what that means, is that I’m diving deep into the R&Rs I have. The GOOD thing about being sick for basically all of February and March (not to mention the personal stuff that happened) was that I got a ton of distance on my book and the requested revisions. I’m excited to be getting deep with the work, although it’s a little intimidating. This is the first time I’ve written in a directed manner…so, wish me luck!
